Clinical Psychotherapy & Counselling

Clinical Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy includes interactive processes between you and your Therapist. Psychotherapy aims to increase your sense of well-being. Psychotherapists employ a range of techniques designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient, or to improve group relationships (such as in a family).

I work as a psychotherapist and counsellor in South Manchester and Worsley using Transactional Analysis (TA) psychotherapy.
The philosophy of Transactional Analysis psychotherapy is as follows:-

Philosophy
- People are OK; thus each person has validity, importance, equality and respect
- Positive reinforcement increases feelings of being OK
- All people have a basic lovable core and a desire for positive growth
- Everyone (with only few exceptions, such as the severely brain-damaged) has the capacity to think
- All of the many facets of an individual have a positive value for them in some way
- People decide their story and destiny, therefore these decisions can be changed
- All emotional difficulties are curable

Freedom from historical mal-adaptations embedded in the childhood script is required in order to become free of inappropriate, inauthentic and displaced emotions which are not a fair and honest reflection of here-and-now life. The aim of change under TA is to move toward autonomy (freedom from childhood script), spontaneity, intimacy, problem solving as opposed to avoidance or passivity, cure as an ideal rather than merely making progress and learning new choices.

Transactional Analysis, is a theory in psychology that examines the interactions, or 'transactions', between a person and other people. The underlying precept is that humans are social creatures and that a person is a multi-faceted being that changes when in contact with another person in their world. Canadian-born US psychiatrist Eric Berne developed the concept and paradigm of TA in the late 1950s.

Is there evidence that therapy works?
There is very clear evidence, that the quality of the relationship between the client and the therapist is very important.

Will I feel better straight away?
You may feel an immediate sense of relief when you begin therapy, maybe because you are being listened to for the first time, or because you have been struggling for a long time.
However, you may feel more anxious or distressed when you start, because you have to pay attention to difficult feelings that, in some way, you would prefer to ignore. In this situation, you may feel worse before you start to feel better. You may find it helpful to discuss with the therapist any concerns you have about how you are reacting to the therapy – at any stage.

What is Counselling ?
Counselling is about being able to talk and express the feelings and thoughts that you have to someone who can really listen to you, someone who can understand what you’re saying and help you to better understand your issues and yourself. Putting actual words to these thoughts and feelings and speaking them out loud can really give you a greater sense of understanding and ownership of those things.

Talking about our thoughts and feelings can be scary. It takes courage, but it is a healthy way to deal with what you are experiencing. It is human nature to need to talk about our stuff, even on a daily basis or when things get tough. We all know what it’s like to just tell somebody our stresses and how that helps us to take control of them. It’s the same with counselling. Talking about things can help us to take control rather than being controlled.
